Santa Maria Draperis Church

Further along from Odakule on the left side there is an arched gateway set within an apartment block that has a statute of the Virgin Mary above it. This leads to a steep set of stairs that take you down into this wonderful double barrel-vaulted church that was designed by the architect Guglielmo Semprini in 1904.

This church was built in place of an existing church dedicated to St. Mary dating from 1584 which frequently burnt down, and takes its name from Clara Bratola Draperis, a Genoese woman who donated the land on which it is built. The inside is impressive and has lots of glimmering stained glass and the many lit candles there create a delightful atmosphere.
